New Principal Mike Moran with IBPO President Francie Hansen.

Dear IBPO Parents,

I have always considered Back to School in late summer my New Year, and attending the recent IBPO incoming freshman gathering reminded me why. You could feel the excitement and hope for the things to come in this fresh school year. I imagine this exists elsewhere, but I think it is particularly special here at a school steeped in a history of great community involvement. At this event, wide-eyed freshman mingled, veteran parents shared their wisdom with new families and dedicated administrators gave their free time to answer questions and get to know the students. Current IB upperclassmen and recent graduates welcomed the new class with icebreakers and tips on making the most of their next four years. This is IB at Woodrow. This is why I am so excited for the 2018-19 school year.

The IB Parent Organization was formed a few years ago by dedicated parents who realized advocacy and support was needed as this program was the first of its kind in our large urban school district. Our purpose is simple. We exist to support the amazing administrators and teachers so that they can offer an enriching educational experience to our students. We have done this through reaching out to the district and/or school board when needed. The IBPO also offers fun events to encourage students during IB class selection or beginning their extended essays, and by celebrating the completion of tasks in this rigorous curriculum. We support our faculty with meals at meetings and drives for needed supplies.

Our general meetings have evolved into a “Speaker Series,” which offers opportunities for members to hear from experts in education and college planning. These meetings also give IB parents time to socialize. This year we hope to expand with a drive to raise funds to purchase some laptops and calculators that can be checked out by students who do not have these resources because IB students need them to write their many essays, do research, or work on their math.

As an alum, I love all things Woodrow. There are so many wonderful options here, and the IB program added the right academic fit for my kids. If you’ve stayed with me this far, it is for yours, too. The IBPO needs you to help make it the best experience for all. Please explore our new website at https://woodrowibpo.com to learn about the organization, donating, and volunteer opportunities. Renew if you are a veteran member, or join us for the first time! As a parent with a rising senior I can assure you time is precious and you won’t regret sharing in this exciting journey with your student.

Wishing you and your Wildcat a wonderful year,

Francie Hansen
